Super Mario Galaxy 2 will have less story

In an interview with WIRED, Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that Super Mario Galaxy 2 will not have as extensive of a narrative as the 2007 orbiting original.

"I'd like to go with as little story as possible," he said. "With the Mario games, you don't need to have such a complicated setting where you have these particular characters with complicated backstories that can weigh down the bright and fun feel of the game."

Completely agree, in some respects. But what I think Miyamoto is really saying is that most Mario titles never had a big storyline, until Galaxy. With Rosalina, and the lumas, gamers expressed disinterest in the slow paced nature of the backstory, in contrast to the energetic gameplay.

For that, blame Yoshiaki Koizumi, the director of Super Mario Galaxy, who wanted more story elements. While the story was great, we all know that aside from some setup, we really don't need a deep narrative to fall in love with the game itself. After all, how many story ideas can you create out of the same princess being captured by the same bad guy.
