District 9 Blu-Ray Disc to feature God of War III Demo

On December 29th, the popular sci-fi flick District 9 will finally be released on Blu-Ray. This release, however, will be unique because it is the first of it's kind. Sony has announced that the release will be the first movie/game demo Blu-Ray hybrid. Sony's choice to be the demo: God of War III.

Here is the official Press Release:

On December 29, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) will introduce the first movie/game demo hybrid Blu-ray in the US with the release of the critically-acclaimed sci-fi thriller District 9. The Blu-ray will feature a playable game demo of the PlayStation 3 system (PS3) exclusive, God of War III – one of the most anticipated video games of 2010. After successfully completing the game demo, the consumer will be able to unlock an exclusive making-of featurette about the game. With more than 8.7 million units sold, the God of War franchise has set the bar for the action-adventure genre with numerous Editor's Choice and Game of the Year awards given by some of the video game industry's key media outlets, such as Game Informer, IGN, and GamePro, to name a few.

"The combination of District 9 and the game demo of God of War III is an unprecedented home entertainment offering," said Lexine Wong, Senior Executive Vice President, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. "We are thrilled to give consumers not only an incredible high definition presentation of District 9 and the wealth of bonus material about the movie, but also a taste of what is destined to be the biggest video game of 2010. This pairing of the movie and game demo is just another example of what is possible with the Blu-ray format."

"Blu-ray functionality has long been a differentiator that separates the PS3 from other home entertainment systems," said Peter Dille, Senior Vice President, Marketing and PlayStation Network, SCEA. "Through this collaboration with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment we're able to create a unique experience only available on the PS3 system that blends two of the most popular entertainment options available, watching District 9 and playing God of War III off the same disc."

Additional bonus materials exclusively available on the Blu-ray edition of District 9 include a Digital Copy of the film for PC, the PSP system (PlayStation Portable), Mac or iPod; the Interactive Map feature "Joburg from Above: Satellite and Schematics of the World of District 9," which provides a highly detailed environmental exploration of the world through a series of interactive satellite maps, technology schematics and photo-real files that take the viewer deeper into the world of the film; and movieIQ, which allows viewers to immediately access continuously updated information on the cast & crew and explore relevant trivia such as production facts, music and soundtrack information all tied to scenes within the movie.

District 9 will be available on Blu-ray for $39.95 SRP.

Princess Peach's roster absence revealed for New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Considering the similarities to Super Mario Bros. 2, one might ask why the game's roster didn't include Princess Peach. In a Q&A session in NYC, Shigeru Miyamoto told reporters the honest answer.

"I thought it'd be nice to have her as a playable character, but the toad characters had a similar physique to a Mario character than Peach does. And if one of the four had a dress, we'd have to come up with a special programming to handle how the skirt is handled in the gameplay, and that's really the only reason why Peach isn't playable (laughs). Of course If we had Wario in there we'd have to program a way to make him fart. (laughs)"

So there you have it. A skirt and a fart singlehandedly brought the roster down to just Mario, Luigi, Toad.... and Toad.

Queen: Rock Band the next in line?

Queen to the Rock Band franchise, lending several tracks to all game discs including the most recent, LEGO Rock Band. Queen guitarist Brian May has even been announced as an animated character in the game.

Official Nintendo Magazine interviewed May, asking about his interest in a full fledged Queen Rock Band title. "It may happen," May said. Whether optimistic or just not canceling out any opportunity, Queen surely has enough tracks to warrant the release of their own music title.

For now, May to have an appearance in LEGO Rock Band. "It's the ultimate accolade, to be portrayed in Lego," he said. "My dreams are all fulfilled now."

New characters announced for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games

Mario and Sonic are back, starting next week, in their next Olympic adventure. The above French trailer shows both Dry Bowser, King Boo and some metal creature from the Sonic universe that I'm unfamiliar with. Either way, it's good to see that Nintendo and SEGA are making a solid game with a solid roster. Because the roster is very important in a game. Very important....(cough TMNT Smash Up cough).

Final Fantasy on Virtual Console

Sure, the original NES Final Fantasy has been re-released more than a George Lucas production, but that's not the point. The point is you can now buy it on the Wii's Virtual Console.

500 Nintendo points gets you Final Fantasy in its original 8-bit glory. No graphical updates, no changes to script, just pure dungeon grinding bliss. Select your team of four light warriors, assemble the four crystals, and put an end to a two thousand year cycle. Again.

Four letter names are back baby.

Demons Soul's Out Now

Hailed as one of the most difficult (and rewarding) games of this console generation, Atlus' Demon's Souls is out now in the US.

If you haven't heard about Demon's Souls, here's the skinny. Garnering near perfect reviews from across the board, Demon's Souls is praised for its stellar graphics, solid gameplay, and brutal difficulty. Simply put, every review I've read so far involves dying hundreds of times.

So if you're looking for a vicious challenge and a gem of an RPG, Demon's Souls should fit the bill.

Kenka Bancho, Memoirs of a Bancho 1

With a name like Kenka Bancho: Bad Ass Rumble, it's hard not to get excited about a game. But for those not easily sold on testosterone infused titles, Atlus is shelling out some reading material about its over the top PSP Brawler.

These segments, known as Memoirs of a Bancho, will introduce readers to the game's features and general insanity. Simply click the picture above to read Memoir 1 and let us know what you think.

And yes, one screen shows the character learning a move called pimp hand. Use it wisely.

Zeno Class Ultimate Edition Announced

From demon infused RPGs to games about punching things in the face, publisher Atlus gets things done. This post concerns the latter as Atlus has announced Zeno Clash: Ultimate Edition for Xbox Live Arcade.

The original Zeno Clash was a first person melee brawler praised for it's satisfying gameplay and dreamscape art style. The new Ultimate Edition will feature several fan demanded tweaks including a co-op tower mode where you and a friend punch endless hordes of foes in the face.

Seriously, what's not to like? Expect to give your knuckles a workout Spring 2010.

Download Gran Turismo, Get a Car!

Today is a good day for racing sim fans as it marks the release of Gran Turismo for the PSP. And with Sony's shift towards all digital gaming (looking at you PSP Go), it only makes sense that Sony starts offering digital incentives.

So let's talk free stuff. If you download Gran Turismo from the PSN, versus buying a UMD copy in the store, you get a free car! That's right, this 2009 Nissan GT-R Spec V (in metallic blue) is a free in-game gift just for embracing technology.
It's no PSP Go UMD transfer program, but a nice treat nonetheless.
