DDR Disney Grooves Trailer

While Dance Dance Revolution successfully crossed through to the casual crowd via the Wii's ultra lame Hottest Party offerings, a new DDR title may be less gimmick and more fun. DDR Disney Grooves will attempt to bridge the beloved Disney brand with the arrow crazy arcade rhythm game.

The game will feature your favorite Disney characters, remixed Disney tunes and Mii support.

Enjoy this new trailer, courtesey of Konami!

New Screens for Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of those games that may fall victim to its own hype. Touted as Resident Evil 4 meets BioShock meets that surprisingly well done Chronicles of Riddick fiasco on Xbox, Asylum has a lot of things to live up to. And as a long time Bats fan, I'd love to see all of these aspirations come to fruition.

Rocksteady Studios (long since separated from partner Bebop) wants to deliver a "dark" take on the bat-verse that emphasizes Master Wayne's detective AND fighting skills. The game takes place in Arkham Asylum where all of the inmates have been set loose and it's up to Batman to do his thing. Basically it's Manhunt 2 with Batman, except Batman doesn't kill people with screwdrivers... so there's that.

Ladies and gentlemen, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill

All that said, Eurogamer has gotten hold of some new Asylum screenshots that look pretty darn good. Any game that's a solid combination of RE4 and BioShock would be on my "games to play" list. Throw in Batman and it's that much of a sure thing.

Here's to hoping.

Eat Lead Character Peeks

There are many reasons I'm looking forward to Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard. Not least of which is my affinity for self-referential meta-humor, which Eat Lead seems entirely built upon. In the world of the game, Matt Hazard is a world-famous 8-bit video game character who is being revamped and 'roided up as a current-gen action/shooter star. As such, you'll control Hazard through levels that mock various gaming cliches from the past several years. Kind of like Roger Rabbit, but with video games.

Oh, and Matt Hazard is voices by Will Arnett, who played Gob on Arrested Development, one of the most self-referential and meta TV shows of all time. And one of the funniest.

D3 Publisher just released a few pieces of character art from the game, and they give us a pretty good glimpse at the kind of humor Eat Lead is going for.

As you can see, we have a half-shirted, one-winged, giant-sworded JRPG staple, a mean-looking manual laborer who looks like he'd kill for a warp pipe, and a Nazi soldier from Castle Wafferthinn. Nice.

Who Phones the Watchmen?

We all know Alan Moore's comic book masterpieces haven't received the best film treatment imaginable. I actually liked V for Vendetta, though many despised it. But the less said about From Hell or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen the better. Unless, of course, you're one of the people in charge of making those abominations. In which case, please explain yourself.

And while Watchmen looks to buck the trend, the ancillary merchandising that must surround such a huge studio movie like some kind of crap moat just keeps growing and growing. We now have details on the upcoming Watchmen game for mobile phones. Despite the fact that it's a beat 'em up, the developer promises "gameplay variety". Impossible, you say?

Eh, you're probably right.

While your phone's battery lasts, you'll be able to take control of the Comedian and/or Nite Owl as they punch and kick their way through a plot that takes place before the original comic books or the movie. According to the press release, this game "can be appreciated by newcomers and diehard fans of the graphic novel", which is true only if you replace "appreciated" with "obsessively mocked".

Of course, I haven't played the game yet, so I shouldn't pass judgement. But despite that, I'm still passing judgement.

Nintendo Releases Launch Schedule for 2009

Nintendo has just released its schedule of first party games to arrive for the DS and Wii for 2009. Now, don't get your hopes up, as the list is pretty much what we knew already, with a few surprises. Release dates for some of the New Play Control! titles are given, as well as '09 confirmation of Endless Ocean 2 and a spring/summer release set for the DSi.

As you can see, North America's list is pretty tiny, but I'm sure that will change soon, courtesy of E3.

You can also check out the entire schedule here!

New Bubble Bobble Wii Ware Screens

Finally, no more having to look at some grainy magazine scan! New screenshots of Bubble Bobble for Wii Ware have just shown up, courtesy of Famitsu.

The game still maintains its old school charm, but don't Bub and Bob look a little... odd? Like ducks? Maybe it's just a bad angle.

Halo Blowing Up

Jason Pace, the all-powerful overseer of everything Halo, recently told Eurogamer that he sees the franchise spreading beyond its first non-shooter Halo Wars into all sorts of crazy genres and media.

"We tend to view the franchise side of Halo as an entertainment property, and something that we hope to expand in many different directions: both through additional genres of gaming and additional ways to tell the story that may not be game-related at all," Pace said between sessions of counting his piles of cash. Or, more likely, being paid to count piles of cash belonging to Microsoft.

Maybe it's because I'm not big into first-person shooters at all, but I've never really jumped on board the Halo bandwagon. I've owned both an Xbox and an Xbox 360 but have never once ponied up the cash to play a Halo game beyond rental. Is there something I'm missing here? Or am I just too sensitive to online preteens telling me how much my mother enjoyed their romantic company?

Still, the core Halo concept is pretty solid, and it could make for some interesting entertainments. Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson and Lovecraftian man-god Guillermo del Toro were once attached to a Halo movie, so it's very possible that such a thing could have turned into something worth watching. And as far as games go, I can't wait to race my buddies in a session of Lil' Halo Kart.

Prince of Persia DLC Details

I really liked the new Prince of Persia, but it's weathered its fair share of criticism. A lot of the scorn is directed at the game's ending, which I won't spoil here. Suffice it to say, I can see how some people might think it's a cop-out. So those people should be happy to know that the upcoming downloadable Prince of Persia content, Epilogue, will continue the story past the end of the game.

And people like me should be happy just to know that we're getting more Prince of Persia.

The DLC will feature a new area to explore, the Underground Palace, as well as a new power for Elika and a new combat move for the Prince. Traps and enemies will also be tougher, and you'll be able to unlock new character skins. Since I've already played through the game a second time dressed as Altair from Assassin's Creed, I could use a new skin. Hopefully one that doesn't constantly inspire me to jump from great heights into carts of hay.

No word on pricing yet, but Epilogue comes out February 26.

New Snowboard Riot Screens

Hudson Entertainment has just released screenshots of its newest winter Wii Ware title, Snowboard Riot. The game is really more of a SSX mixed Diddy Kong Racing, where you actually have weapons at your disposal. Homing bullets, turbo boosts, mines and invisibility all will help guide your racer down the slopes during competitive races. You can even race online using Nintendo WFC, which allows up to 4 boarders.

You can use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, or you can shred the slopes on your Wii Balance Board. The game only offers four different character choices, but with all the other features, this game is shaping up to be a solid Wii Ware title.

Netflix & Xbox: The Love Fest Continues

Netflix recently announced that the company has seen a big increase in users due to the sluggish economy, mostly because people just don't want to leave the house and spend money. This has also helped Xbox360, because many Netflix users utilize the instant streaming function, where you can pick from thousands of titles and watch them from your console, all built in to the price of the subscription.

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter claims that 800,000 Xbox Live members were Netflix subscribers when the streaming service launched on their console, but 200,000 have signed up because of its assesibility. Pachter claims that the Xbox Live Gold membership has been great for expanding the Netflix audience, as he expects "to see as many as 1 million join as Netflix members in the next year."

The service has been a match made in heaven for both companies. And with the upcoming release of a new LG TV featuring the same Netflix streaming capabilities, it seems like Blockbuster will soon be a distant memory.

Nintendo Reports BIG Third Quarter, as Usual

NINTENDO REPORTS THIRD QUARTER FINANCIALS FOR FISCAL YEAR 2009

Global Sales Mark 17% Growth Over Previous Year

Jan. 28, 2009

Despite nearly unprecedented strength of the yen against major foreign currencies, Nintendo Co., Ltd. on Thursday (Japan time) reported 9-month (April to December 2008) global sales of 1,536 billion yen, an increase of nearly 17% over the same period in 2007, along with 501 billion yen of operating profits, up 27% from a year ago. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Nintendo Co., Ltd. has exceeded the previous results for the same nine month period. At the same time, recurring and net profits for the same nine month periods each declined about 18% due to 174 billion yen of foreign currency reevaluation losses from assets held in currencies other than Japanese yen (such as bank deposits without forward exchange contracts).

Click to Keep Reading...

For the full fiscal year ending March 31, 2009, the company revised its unit sales forecast for the portable Nintendo DS™ system upward by 3% to 31.5 million globally, while the DS software forecast was lowered by 7% to 193 million. For the Wii™ system, with softness in the Japanese consumer market, full year global unit sales estimates for both hardware and software were revised downward by 3%, to 26.5 million systems and 193 million games, respectively, in spite of the overall robust sales outside Japan.

As a result, and with the changes in the anticipated foreign currency exchange ratios, Nintendo Co., Ltd. has revised estimates for fiscal sales and profit projections for the full year ending March 31, 2009. However, the company remained on pace to set historic records for Net Sales and Operating Profit for the full 12 month period.

Other highlights announced by Nintendo today include the following cumulative shipment figures from launch through the end of December 2008:

  • Total LTD shipments of Nintendo DS hardware were 96.22 million worldwide, along with more than 533 million games.
  • Total LTD Wii shipments reached nearly 45 million worldwide, along with over 312 million games.
  • The LTD shipment of Wii Fit™ reached 14 million, and Mario Kart™ Wii reached 13.67 million.

FFIV2 Coming to XBLA?

The Final Fantasy franchise's udders must be pretty raw by now, because Square Enix just can't milk it enough. Thirteen core games, numerous spinoffs, pseudosequels, strategy titles, action figures, and straight to DVD movies later, and the brand seems stronger than ever. Sweet Christmas, that's a lot of milk!

Their latest dairy strategy involves continuing the stories of the most popular installments of the main franchise. FFX got its own sequel, and FF7 has become a cottage industry unto itself. Last year, Sqeenix released a followup to one of my favorites, the SNES's Final Fantasy IV, with the mobile phone exclusive Final Fantasy IV: The After, an episodic adventure told in classic 16-bit style. (Could there be a more awkward subtitle? No. And that's why it's brilliant.)

But since I don't have a cellular plan in Japan, there's no way I could play it. Bummer.

Until it's comes out on the Xbox Live Arcade, that is. 1up has uncovered a mysterious URL on the Japanese Xbox 360 site that seems to suggest room is being made for FF4:tA on the online service. If so, that's just one step closer to an English-language release.

Please, Squeenix, make this happen! I must know the fates of Cecil, Rosa, and that other guy! (Haven't played it in a while, so my memory's all spoony.)

New Final Fantasy XIII Trailer

Well, that elusive countdown we mentioned last week on Square-Enix's Final Fantasy XIII site has turned out to be one swanky trailer.

Emphasis on the swanky.

For a company as secretive as Squeenix I have to say I'm impressed with how much the trailer shows. All of the dialogue is in Japanese, so I have no idea what the actual story is, but information is abundant regardless.

There are several fight sequences showing off the basics of the combat system which looks to be ripe with combos and animations. The production values seem to be at the expected Squeenix high and suffice it so say that I am excited for the game.

But don't take my word for it, check out the glorious new FFXIII trailer here.

Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard

What happens when you have a first gen character, who enters a next gen video game? The result, Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard. This new third person action title features the return of a fictional 80's game hero, Matt Hazard. The game, being developed by Vicious Cycle, gives Matt Hazard some awesome weapons, power-ups, and a vicious right hook.

I'm not sure what the game is really trying to achieve, but I like it! Look for the game to hit the PS3 and Xbox360 in this first half of this year.

Watch one of the three new gameplay trailers here!

Also, if you haven't seen it, watch this mockumentary of Matt Hazard's life.

Resident Evil 5 Demo Impressions

In your face, PlayStationers! The Resident Evil 5 demo is exclusive to Xbox Live for a week! That's seven more days of demo fun than the competition, and I'm sure it was worth however many millions of dollars Microsoft spent for the privilege.

Hey, stop your crying, laid off Microsoft employee. It was worth it!

As a paying Xbox Live Gold member (that's right, Sony fanboys, we pay for our online service on this side of the tracks because we're rich and beautiful), I downloaded the demo yesterday. Here are some of my thoughts so far:
  • This game is pretty. Sure, it's mostly browns and tans like every other current-gen shooter, but there's a slickness to everything that really adds a sheen of believability. Unfortunately, that makes shooting nearly photo realistic people in the head a far more disturbing experience than usual. I stared into a man's eyes as I murdered him last night, and my soul still hasn't recovered.
  • This game is clunky. The default aiming speed is slower than Paula Abdul. I went into the options and bumped it up, but I'm still not able to aim as quickly as I want. When you're inside a wooden shanty with dozens of zombies coming in through the doors and windows, you'll want to whip your pistol around a little more quickly.
  • This game is clunky. The inventory system is nearly broken. To switch weapons or use an item, you press the Y button to bring up a little in-game menu. This would be fine except that the zombies are still trying to eat your face while you fiddle around for a green herb. Again, frustration.
  • This game is clunky. Chris Redfield moves like he's underwater. And that's when he's moving at all. If you stop to aim, you stop. Period. No walking and shooting. This is particularly annoying when you're being set upon by a chainsaw-weilding sack-head. You'll want to walk backwards while planting the ridiculous number of bullets it takes to bring this freak down, but no dice. Unless you stop shooting, turn around, and run away, you're dead. One hit with that chainsaw, and your torso can go ahead and star in a Doublemint Gum commercial.
  • This game is clunky. It plays similarly to Resident Evil 4, which I loved, but things just feel...off. There's a note about this being a work in progress when you fire up the demo, but with a release date in March, I'm not sure how much more work could go into this thing. Downloadable patch, anyone?
So there you go. I should point out that I haven't had a chance to play in co-op mode yet. I had no one to play with locally (I'm so alone!), and no one online seemed to want to let me join their game or even join the ones I tried to host. But if the co-op works exactly like the single player campaign, it could be fun. In SP, you'll be followed by a sultry female companion who helps you out with the zombie killin' and can access different areas of the level. If you replace her computer brain with a friend's brain, there are probably some very good times to be had. I just can't say for sure yet.

Anyway, Resident Evil 5 doesn't appear to be a bad game at all. Just a little disappointing in its quirks. Overall, I had a pretty good time with the demo, and I'm looking forward to playing the full game. None of its idiosynchrocies kill the experience, and all of them can probably be overcome with some practice. They just shouldn't be there in the first place.

Resident Evil 5 will be available March 13. And you PS3 suckers can get your paws on the demo next week.

More Maw

I downloaded the demo for the new Xbox Live Arcade game The Maw, and I can't say I was very impressed. Basically, The Maw is an homage to the old NES game A Boy and his Blob. You control a crash landed alien who uses a hungry, gape-mouthed blob of goo to traverse through the countryside. When the blob eats enough of a certain kind of creature, it adopts a new power, which works as either a weapon or a tool to get through levels.

It's a straighforward game, and it does a lot of things right. It's a fully 3D platformer, which is a nive change of pace from the usual 2D XBLA releases. And it looks and plays as well as you'd want. It's just dull is all. And for some reason you can't point the camera to the sky, which can be frustrating.

But maybe those problems will be fixed with some downloadable content. Developer Twisted Pixel tells Kotaku that they're working on three new levels to be released as DLC in the coming weeks. They'll figure into the game as "deleted scenes" and will be accessible from the main menu.

Hit the link for more details on what to expect from these new levels while I go play A Boy and His Blob on my NES emulator on a perfectly legal NES and cartridge.

Fitness Wii Title Sells a Million

Namco Bandai's Active Life: Outdoor Challenge has just stepped into the extraordinary league of million units sold. The game, known as Family Trainer: Athletic World in Europe, comes with a Power Pad like mat, used for your hands or feet to simulate actions instead of traditional button inputs. Some of the mini-games included are mine carting, the water trampoline and river rafting.

Here is the sales breakdown as of Dec. 08:

Japan: 140,000 copies
North America: 540,000 copies
Europe: 320,000 copies

This game is pretty cool, but not nearly as cool as the Power Pad!

New TMNT Character Screens

Looks like we finally get our first look at the turtles for the upcoming Wii fighter, TMNT: Smash UP.
The characters appear to be the same design style as that from the 2007 TMNT movie, as well as the Ubisoft video game of the same name. I'm just wondering if other potential characters like Krang, Bebop or Rocksteady will receive such new character face-lifts. I think it would be great to have the old school 80's design for all playable characters, in addition to the updated character design.

I bet 80's Splinter could kick 2009 Splinter's butt!

Rocking in the Library

Ever since the advent of anything other than reading, it's been tough to get punk kids (by which I mean all kids) to read. Public libraries have tried many things to bring in the under-74 set, including allowing people to check out books free of charge for a certain period time just as long as they promise to bring them back.

Freaky, I know.

But since that hasn't worked, the public libraries in Des Moines, Iowa are trying something new. They've outfitted themselves with some Xbox 360s and Wiis and are luring impressionable youths into their taxpayer funded dens of learning with Rock Band tournaments and the promise of waggling sticks at TV screens (Wii games, in other words).

Of course, this is all just a bait and switch scam, as they then encourage children to put down their plastic guitars and pick up a dusty, sweat-stained stack of glue and paper called a book. Personally, I think this is going to be a tough sell. As much as I'd love for kids to read more, I don't think they'll go for any form of entertainment that doesn't result in finger cramps. Which explains the lasting popularity of thumb wrestling.

New Weapons for Golemizer

Let's just get this out of the way first. No, you probably haven't heard of Golemizer. To catch up, Golemizer is a free browser-based steampunk MMORPG created by indie game developer Dave Toulouse. It's a 2D affair where you play a mad scientist who crafts his own golems--basically robotic pets that you can command. Like any MMORPG, there's plenty of customizable content, with a pretty extensive crafting system for houses, weapons, and other items. And for those of you needing a social group that doesn't include all that pesky human-to-human eye contact, there are also guilds.

I'm all for 2D MMOs, if only because they're something else to do at work besides actual work. So why not give Golemizer a shot and report back?

As an added incentive, here's a list of the new weapons available in the game:
  • Junk shotgun (shoots junk)
  • Steam thrower (throws steam)
  • Slime gun (well, you know)
  • Raygun (a mad scientist staple)
  • Time warper (traps your opponents in a temporal stasis while you fiddle with their hair and draw pictures on their faces [I'm assuming])
Go get your MMO on.

New PSP Colors for Japan

The PSP has been struggling in the sales arena as of late. Usually, the best way to cause a spike in sales is to introduce a new color. The PSP must have needed extra help, because Sony is introducing 4 new colors. These bright "carnival colors" will be available this March in Japan. "Vibrant Blue" and "Radiant Red" will be released on March 5th, for $223 US, while "Bright Yellow" and "Spirited Green" will be available March 19th.

All four colors also come in a value pack ($270US) which comes with Memory Stick PRO Duo 4GB, a battery pack and a matching colored case.

No word yet on whether these colors will see a US release.

Indy Coming to Wii, DS

Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings has been officially announced. The game will hit the Wii and DS this Spring. The new trailer also indicates that the game will release for PlayStation, however it doesn't say what system. We can assume the PS2 and PSP both have a good shot.

Staff of Kings is a different Indy title than the one announced a few years ago for next-gen consoles. That next-gen game could always release, but for now it looks like Wii won the Indy war.

It's the Final (Fantasy XIII) Countdown

Square-Enix, in all of its info trickling glory, has a mysterious countdown timer running on one of its Final Fantasy XIII pages. The countdown is set to end on January 23rd, and could represent any number of things: playable demos, release dates, free cookies, or even another countdown.

The FFXIII countdown page also features a registration tab which asks for general information such as your email address, age, and gender. This information will most likely be used to aid the Final Fantasy heroes in their quest for the crystals. Or for marketing purposes.

Regardless, check back Wednesday for a breakdown of whatever "it" actually is.

In the meantime, take a gander for yourself here.
