Scott Pilgrim Bob-ombs at Box Office

The weekend box office numbers are in and they're not pretty. For gamers at least. Scott Pilgrim, the video game/comic book/nerdgasm hybrid, finished in 5th place behind 'The Expendables,' 'Eat, Pray, Love,' 'The Other Guys,' and 'Inception' pulling in a meager $10.5 million, with a rumored production cost of $60 million. :(

Should we as gamers be shocked though? The Scott Pilgrim comic franchise is basically an underground Canadian phenomenon that's permeated it's way into the hearts of American comic book readers (this writer included). But it's far from the mass appeal of Spider-Man.

Michael Cera once again portrays an awkward adolescent struggling with relationship issues, albeit in a universe where fights are visual effects smorgasbords and enemies explode into coins. Don't get me wrong, the film oozes charm and is a must see for anyone who hearts video games and comic books. Anyone outside of said demographic will look on in utter confusion spouting phrases like, "Is that the internet?"

Don't f*ck with Julia Roberts.

Sadly, mainstream audiences don't fit the bill and although Pilgrim may win vs. the world, he got totally KO'd at the box office.

Paperboy: The Movie, trailer

I can't believe how cool this is. I'm so glad that there are people out there that appreciate the classic games of my youth. Paperboy will always go down as one of my favorite retro gaming past times, and this faux movie trailer explains why!

New Avatar Poster Shows Off Neytiri

Recognize that face? That's Zoe Saldana with a WETA facelift as she appears in James Cameron's upcoming sci-fi epic, Avatar.

Saldana is portraying Neytiri, a member of the Na'vi alien race that finds their planet in conflict with human marines. Avatar is touted as a visual orgasm, so hopefully we'll see more eye candy soon.

Marvel Anime Coming in 2010

Since I was a wee lad, I've loved comic books and anime. And while I've enjoyed the heck out of both, I've always wanted a direct fusion of western characters and eastern animation. You know, a Spider-Man anime.

Well color me excited as Comic-Con 2009 revealed two trailers from the newly founded Marvel Anime's 2010 slate with Iron-Man and Wolverine titles in the works.

But don't take my word for it, check out the trailers below! (Take note on the Iron Man action sequences Jon Favreau.)

Apple still Blu-Ray-less, except Final Cut Studio

Blu-Ray is quickly becoming more accepted by general audiences as a true competitor for DVD. No it won't overturn the service anytime soon, but people are starting to take notice of the graphical advancements the format presents.

Despite being a leader in technical innovation, Apple still isn't jumping on the Blu-Ray bandwagon. However, it has been announced that Apple will allow Blu-Ray disc burning for projects created in the latest Final Cut Studio. Definitely a step in the right direction, but still not enough. How can people feel safe purchasing a wide Blu-Ray collection if they can't even use them on their computers or laptops?

Even Wal-Mart is advertising Blu-Ray players, despite their ads strictly going after that soccer mom demographic. You know, the ones who wear mom jeans and rent Disney Blu-Rays for their kids. Regardless, we need Blu-Ray players to become standard in a larger percentage of the PC and Mac marketplace, or else HD saturation might be a ways away.

inFAMOUS: The Movie, coming to a theater near you

Screenwriter Sheldon Turner has partnered with Sony Pictures to bring the sci-fi action game inFAMOUS to the bring screen. Producers Avi Arad and Ari Arad are also attached to the project, who are also working on the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune movie as well. Here's what Turner had to say about the film.-

"What excited me most about the game was it was the first of which I've come across that had a big idea and a character arc," Turner said. "It is, I believe, the future of gaming. The game, while big and fun, is at its core a love ballad to the underachiever, which is what our hero, Cole McGrath, is."

How do video game movies rank?

With the news of World of Warcraft coming to the big screen, it seems like the perfect time to reflect upon other games that have transitioned to the big screen. Here are some notable scores from Rotten Tomatoes, which rank's films based on multiple critic reviews from 1% (terrible) to 100% (amazing).
----------------------------------------------------------------
Doom - 20%
"A nifty piece of low-ambition entertainment..."

Dragonball: Evolution - 13%
"For anyone writing it off as a kiddie film, [it] should be considered child abuse."
-Diva Velez, The Diva Review

Double Dragon - 00% (ever see that before?)
"Nonsense."
-Clint Morris, Moviehole

Mortal Kombat -
24%
"Like watching a lot of sweaty fist fights while trapped in the world's loudest night club."
-Scott Weinberg, eFilmCritic.com

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - 19%
"Jolie kept her side of the deal, everyone else owes her big time."
-Harry Guerlin, RTE Interactive

Resident Evil - 34%
"Entertainment in dire need of its own self-assurance."

Super Mario Bros. -
6%
"They should have used cheat codes to make this a winner."
-Gerry Shamray, Sun Newspapers of Cleveland

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li - 4%
"Quite simply an embarrassment that cannot crawl into ignoble obscurity fast enough"
- Mark Pollard, Kung Fu Cinema

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay well I guess this proved that maybe we should be worried about future video game to movie adaptations. After all, these were just some of the titles that came to mind, and well, the reviews speak for themselves.

Sam Raimi bringing 'World of Warcraft' to a theater near you

Guess what WoW fanatics? World of Warcraft is officially being turned into a movie, according to Blizzard. The game to movie transition probably won't suffer the same fate as the cheasy Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter flicks. Why not? Because Sam Raimi is directing!

In case you aren't up on the who's who of movie directors, Raimi is best known for the Spider-Man trilogy. Consider this great news for those who like things done right.

G.I. Joe, PS3 screenshots & boxart

Who would have thought G.I. Joe would be made into a movie (and subsequently a game)? Can you believe this is happening!? I'm not sure if that's a good "can you believe this is happening" or a bad "can you believe this is happening." Regardless, I can't believe this is happening.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune movie in the works

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that a movie version of the popular video game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, is being developed by Columbia Pictures. Kyle Ward is penning the flick, having previous game to film experience with Kane & Lynch and the upcoming Hitman 2.

The film will be based on the first video game, and will most likely debut after the second video game in the series Uncharted 2, releases. So it's kind of a movie prequel to the second game's story of what you know happens based on both that and the original game, or something...

Scream 4, already canceled? Maybe (Movie News)

Well that was quick. Just about a week after Wes Craven officially confirmed that the 4th Scream film is starting to develop, the film's writer revealed he's a having some issues.

Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first two flicks, posted this unpleasing message on his Twitter page: "Trying to figure out a Sid-less scenario. She won't do it. This sucks." Williamson continued, "Come on Sid! Say yes! Please!!!!!! I'm begging!!!!!" and "Moving forward with all my characters regardless ... it's the story I wanna tell."

The NY Post's PopWrap contacted Williamson, begging for an elaboration of the cryptic messages. He responded, "I've had numerous conversations with Neve. She's a friend. Nicest girl on the planet. It just ain't workin' out and it sucks for me. It was no cameo. I'd never play Sid out that way. And I ain't got no Sid-less scenario. So, I don't know yet what to do."

Well crap mouse. Williamson has been writing Scream 4 for a while now, so presumably the role of Sidney Prescott was pretty big. However don't worry Scream fans. As recently as 4 days ago, Williamson is continuing his work. He tweeted, "Working on S4. Have completely spooked myself. Think there's a killer in every closet."

Movie News: Scream 4 slowly developing

Director Wes Craven has dished a bit in an interview with DigitalSpy about the recently announced plans to reboot the Scream franchise. Here's what he said:

What's the status with Scream 4 at the moment? Are we going to see you direct it?
"Bob Weinstein (The Weinstein Company co-chairman) has talked to me, he's interested in me directing it. I had a brief conversation with Kevin [Williamson], I know that Kevin is writing. What I've said to Bob is I'm not closed to it, I'm not open to it, I'll be perfectly happy to read a script and tell him what I think. That's where it's at and I'm not expecting a script until August. I don't know what the premise is or anything."

Do you know what form it's taking? The word 'reboot' has been used.
"I don't think it's a reboot and Kevin, when he talked to me, said, 'Remember, it's not just Scream 4, it's Scream 5 and 6.' So I guess he has a trilogy in mind."

It's looking like the Arquettes are coming back. Do you know if Neve Campbell will be returning?
"I've been told, and I don't think they'll mind if I say this, the deals on David Arquette and Courteney are virtually set. I believe everybody else will be new."

You satirised the horror genre with the original Scream trilogy. Is there a danger that it'll either lose its edge or fall into self-parody the more films you make?
"There are a host of dangers in making more films. We have a saying in the United States, 'Jump the shark'. You don't want to do that, you don't want to drive it into the ground. You're avoiding those kind of dangers, hopefully, making the kind of film that has self-awareness from the characters where they're talking about film. I'm sure you can run that into the ground very quickly. I don't have a clue what Kevin is writing. He might be completely going around me, I don’t know."

Were you flattered or annoyed by the Scary Movie series poking fun at Scream?
"I laughed but it was also annoying because somebody used my very shots and I didn't have any financial participation in it! It was less than a year after we'd finished Scream 3 that that came out. You just have to keep moving in Hollywood because somebody will be right on your heels making parodies of what you've just done."

Up Movie Review

A film that lifts your spirits. (In 3-D!)

There's something about old people that's inherently funny.  Be it their physical ailments, cranky demeanors, or time stamped wardrobes, there's always a cheap chuckle to be found.  Equally as entertaining are dogs, whose behaviors have been mined for comedy gold to the point of species stereotyping.

And while any chump off the street can string together a scenario involving old people and dogs that caninduce laughter, leave it to Pixar (and their unrivaled sense of imagination) to tell a story with old people, dogs, a gender confusing bird, AND an overzealous boy scout that yields more than laughter.  You'll laugh, you'll cheer, and you'll fight back tears.

The folks at Pixar are by no means strangers to material that's sniffle inducing.  Be it Wall-e's incredible loneliness, the loss of Nemo's mother, or in Up's case, an old man losing his wife during their golden years.

Up starts off on a high note showing future geezer Carl, as an adventurous young lad who falls in love with the even more quest seeking tomboy, Ellie.  A fantastic montage shows the pair in love throughout the decades dealing with all of the curve balls life throws at them, but never faltering in their affections.  They plan to one day follow in the footsteps of their childhood hero, super adventurer Charles Muntz, who disappeared on a trek to Paradise Falls in South America.

Sadly, Ellie passes away and Charles is left to live his remaining years without his childhood sweetheart by his side.  This turns the lovable Carl into the curmudgeonly Mr. Fredricksen.

You see all of this sweeping love story and feel the pain of loss and loneliness in the first ten minutes of the film.  After this quick six hundred seconds (if you have a heard and/or soul) then like me you'll be immediately attached to these characters.

Without spoiling anymore than the trailer reveals, the rest of the plot involves Russell, a Wilderness Explorer trying to assist Carl and earn his elderly assistance badge.  At the same time, Carl's home is taken away from him and he is forced to move to a retirement community.  Wanting to fulfill his promise of adventure to Ellie, Carl (a balloon salesman) fills his house with... well... balloons and sets sail for Paradise Falls in South America.

As luck would have it Russell ends up joining the foray and the comedy gold ensues.  Carl and Russell eventually team up with Dug, a dog equipped with a talking collar, in efforts to protect Kevin (a female exotic bird) from wayward adventurer turned bad guy Charles Muntz.

The writers of Up have done a phenomenal job of securing Carl, Russell, Kevin and Dug into the Pixar Walk of Fame.  Each character's journey is both touching and enjoyable, all the while never feeling like a total downer.  Even the tears evoked by Carl's love for Ellie are tears in the vein of sweetness rather than gut wrenching depression.

Every tiny detail, from the way Russell struggles with abandonment regarding his father, to the way the simple minded Dug immediately falls in love with anyone interesting (as only dogs can), just adds to the experience.  Up's story is coherent, whimsical, charming, and above all entertaining.  Add in the stunning (STUNNING) Disney Digital 3-D and you have what is arguably the most polished Pixar film and one of the most endearing animated films to date.

The Verdict:
If old folks make you laugh, go watch Up.  If dogs make you laugh, go watch Up.  If you hate movies altogether... go watch Up.  I walked away with a laugh on my face and a sincere desire to spend some quality time with my loved ones.  Pixar's known for their ability to target the wonders of childhood and imagination, and Up may be their highest benchmark yet.
(9.0/10)
