Pray your original Xbox never breaks, because starting today Microsoft will no longer service the big black beast. Say what you will about the hulking behemoth with the jet engine fan and controllers so big only the Cloverfield monster could use them--the Xbox was a great system. The processing power and lighting effects made those games that took full advantage of the system (Splinter Cell, The Chronicles of Riddick)look nearly as good as HD games today. And the built-in hard drive was a revelation in gaming--so much so that its absence from the Xbox 360 was a nearly unforgivable oversight.
Microsoft will still service those original Xboxes that are still under warranty (although how those could exist after they stopped making the thing in 2006 is beyond me), but the rest of you will have to work your way through the extensive troubleshooting documentation now available online.
So the next time you fire up your dusty old console to play whatever great game is mysteriously non-backward compatible on the 360 (I'm looking at you, Beyond Good and Evil), know that each spin of the disc inside could be the last. Savor it, man! For pity's sake, savor your time together!
