Even though we're drowning in quality first-person shooters these days, the whole "jiggling gun at the bottom of the screen" genre seems to have grown a little stale. Sure, there's nothing particularly wrong with most of them, but very few reach the same kinds of creative heights as Half-Life 2, Bioshock, or Call of Duty 4. In years past, id Software churned out genre-busting shooters all over the damn place. Hell, they practically invented the things. But these days? Not so much.
Which is why it's more than a little disappointing to hear their long in development post-apocalyptic open world shooter Rage won't come out to play until at least next year. CEO Todd Hollenshead (also my favorite kind of cheese, by the way) told Gametrailers TV Rage will "probably" be released on every HD console and the PC before 2011. His excuse? That they'll only launch the game "when it's done and when it's fun".
Personally, I think that's crap. Looking at the Wii section of my local game store, I see literally hundreds of titles that were released neither done nor fun. Are you saying id is better than those companies, Mr. Hollenshead?
