Consoles are fighting for your TV space

One issue that has never presented itself prior to now, is space for your favorite consoles to fit within your gaming room. For decades, consoles have been constructed to be compact enough that those wanting to take part in, say Nintendo, Sony or Sega systems have been able to do so. However, those times are fading fast.

Nintendo's Wii release brought with it the sensor bar, an attachment necessary for IR communication to be sent to your TV with your Wii Remote. The sensor bar needs to be in front of your TV. But wait a minute. Next year's release of Microsoft's Project Natal will bring a sensor bar that also needs to be in front of your TV to accurately track your movements. Additionally, Sony will be using their PlayStation Eye to bring motion controls to your TV. Right now that's three peripherals that want to be attached to the bottom or top of your television, impossible if you don't have a big screen.

In addition, specific software titles such as Ubisoft's Your Shape featuring Jenny McCarthy, are bundled with a motion sensing camera to be used to help assess your fitness level.

It's clear that for technology to advance, console developers are forced to bring add-on peripherals that just won't work crammed into a console. However, these sensor bar and camera releases are going to turn your surrounding TV space into a solid piece of real estate that needs careful console consideration. Unless you have a nice 42" plasma, you might have to narrow down your gaming hardware selection.
