Netflix a Hit on XBL

The jury's still out on whether adding Xbox Live support for Netflix instant streaming last fall was a bigger win for Microsoft or the mail-order movie rental company, but now we're starting to see some hard numbers. As of last November 19th when the service went live, a million Xbox Live members have downloaded and installed the Netflix app and 1.5 billion minutes of video content have been watched through it. To put that in perspective, try and imagine one Xbox Live member using Netflix on his console. Now multiply that by a million.

Crazy, I know.

Of course, all those ridiculously inexpensive Xbox 360 holiday bundles came with a free trial subscription to Netflix, so there's no telling right now how many of them actually ponied up the subscription fee to keep the service. Still, this is good news for everyone, including gamers who need a break every now and then from scrounging for refuse in Fallout 3.

Personally, I've been using the thing to watch untold amounts of vintage Doctor Who. I just finished the one with the tin foil sets and dudes in rubber suits, and I'm about to start the one with dudes in rubber suits running around tin foil sets. In case you were interested.
