Guru Sees Price Cuts

Video game industry analyst Michael Pachter has dismembered a black cat, boiled it in a secret herb solution, and thrown its bones. How else to explain his prognostications about the future of HD console pricing?

There is no other explanation!

Regardless, he sees price cuts in the future for both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. With the PS3 running third place in the current-gen console wars and its parent company Sony hemorrhaging money like a Lotto winner at a trailer show, it makes sense that cost cuts would be on the table. Manufacturing PS3s has gotten cheaper, so Sony isn't losing quite as much on each console sold as they used to. Pachter figures they'll drop the price of the base model 80 gig system from $399 to $299 in April. They'll still be in the red on costs, but a more attractive price point could increase the PS3's install base, which would send a little much needed cash Sony's way. They're hungry, and all they want is maybe something from the dollar menu. Really, they'll take whatever you can spare.

Pachter also interprets his cat bones to say Microsoft will cut the price of the 60 gig 360 Pro model to $250 in June. You know, just to be jerks.

There's no price drop in sight for the Wii, however, since the world's population will still pay any price and kill any first born children to get their hands on that little white waggle box.
