According to Nielsen Ratings, the most played video game console from January to October of 2008 was Sony's Playstation 2.
Consider it a console war coup d’etat, but the Playstation 2 has a lot of things in its favor. For starters, the PS2 is the greatest selling console of all time with over 148 million units shipped. Most families have a stockpile of PS2 games strewn about, so when the system goes out it makes sense for them to get another PS2 rather than the much more expensive PS3, of which only certain models are backwards compatible.
Also, the PS2 helped usher in the mainstream success of DVDs. While DVDs and DVD players are a dime a dozen, a lot of people are just fine with their PS2 DVD experience rather than forking over all the cake necessary for a Blu-Ray setup. While the PS3 is hoping to replicate the PS2/DVD trend with Blu-Ray, the jury’s still out.
From a personal perspective, I can’t step into a GameStop without fighting a mob of kids digging through bins of used PS2 games. The little buggers are always trying to trade in old Madden games for M rated titles like Scarface and San Andreas which, while annoying, is a testament to the system’s legacy in a World of Warcraft.
So congratulations PS2. Even in your death throws you’re a force to be reckoned with. It might not hurt to give your PS3 and PSP brethren a few pointers before they send you to that great pawn shop in the sky.
