Halo 3, Castle Crashers Top Xbox Live

The new year is always good for a few superfluous lists and retrospectives.  They're a lot easier to write than actual news, and they don't require anything new to happen.  But it's thanks to one of those lists that we know what people are playing on Xbox Live (pictured: people playing on Xbox Live).  According to Microsoft shill Major Nelson, Halo 3 was the most played game on XBL, and Castle Crashers was the most popular XBL Arcade title.  I don't spend a huge amount of time playing online, but neither one of those games would have been at the top of my list.  Any benefit of the online Halo 3 experience is all but ruined by the general creepiness of the other players, and Castle Crashers, while cool looking, is just repetitive.  For my money, Grand Theft Auto 4's online multiplayer was the best of the year.  It came in as the #3 most played, but there's nothing like coaxing an apparent ally into your helicopter, flying to maximum altitude, and bailing in a forced suicide pact.  But I guess popularity doesn't equal quality all the time.
