PS3's On the Cheap


We've all heard the old saying that you have to spend money to make money. If this gem of wisdom is still applicable in today's economy then Sony's PS3 sales are borderline philanthropy.

According to the cats at Bloomberg, the first wave of PS3s cost $690.23 per unit to make, with the most expensive units being sold for $600. This left Sony losing around $100 or more per system sold.

Don't put your Crash Bandicoot titles on e-bay just yet though. The newest PS3 models use thirty percent less moving parts, decreasing that hefty building cost to $448.73. The new PS3's are thus costing Sony a mere $50 or so per console.

Couple the loss on manufacturing costs with their free online play and Sony makes the Salvation Army look stingy spinsters. Now only if the online was as reliable and streamline as the Xbox 360's...
