I'm not sure when the retail store made the switch between being a place I feared to being a place I admired, but Hot Topic stores have really come around. Under their "Licensed Gear" clothing tab, they have a whole section devoted to gamers. Some items have included a Frog Mario t-shirt, Bee Mario wristbands and currently, one super fly Tanooki Mario sweatshirt (that I am proudly wearing right now).Despite all this greatness, the site just added something so incredible, so unique, so retro... The Nintendo World Championships 1990 t-shirt!
For those not familiar with the Nintendo World Championships, you can simply rent the movie "The Wizard," starring Fred Savage, which is more or less a shameless promotion for the convention. If you're short on time, the Nintendo World Championships (also known as Powerfest '90) was Nintendo's way of touring the country to unite gamers alike. The event featured demos of upcoming games, some of which included Castlevania III, Mega Man 3 and even Super Mario Bros. 3. The convention also featured a huge stage where tournaments were held for some of the hottest titles including Rad Racer, Super Mario Bros. and Tetris. That is an awesome shirt! If I could keep one thing related to The Wizard it would be a tossup between that glorious T and Tobey Maguire's sweet mullet.
